News: PC&S Transportation Design Project for Bridge M-16 in Sussex County Nears Completion
| |
1/19/2009
Pickering, Corts & Summerson, Inc., a full service Engineering Firm headquartered in Newtown, Bucks County, PA, recently provided field surveys, feasibility studies, engineering, and construction inspection services for the replacement of Sussex County Bridge, M-16, located on County Route 653 in Montague Township, NJ.
In order to minimize impacts to the surrounding local residents, emergency service providers and the Montague School District, an accelerated construction schedule was implemented to reduce the duration of the traffic detour. Construction began on June 27, 2008, immediately after the summer closing of the Montague Schools. The bridge was reopened to traffic on September 15, 2008.
Closure of Route 653 involved rerouting drivers through New York State for a portion of the 12 mile long detour. Due to the extensive length of detour, a temporary bypass road and bridge was provided on the downstream side of the new structure to provide emergency services with access to a near by hospital.
The project involved the replacement of an existing 2-span concrete slab bridge with a new single span prestressed adjacent slab beam bridge and approximately 500 ft of full depth-approach pavement reconstruction. PCS provided structure, roadway, traffic control, right of way, erosion and sediment control plans, DEP permits, and specifications for construction.
Form liners were applied to exposed concrete surfaces to simulate the appearance of stone masonry construction. The form lined surfaces will be stained in the Spring of 2009 to match the color and appearance of the native stone landscape of the project area, which is located near High Point State Park.
