5/1/2009
On April 23rd Pickering, Corts & Summerson, Inc. proudly supported “Bring Your Children to Work Day” by hosting our second annual event with our staffs’ children at our Newtown, PA office. The day served as a great opportunity to build awareness of careers and the workforce among our younger generation by using fun, interactive activities throughout the day.
Our 16 guests started the morning off by learning about the many careers we have at PCS and were able to chose their career for the day and were even able to dress up for a photograph to take home with them. The children then played Bingo with Jennifer Stokes, Controller, and Paul Gouza, Director of Operations, and discussed the importance of numbers for accountants and project managers. Next, the children learned about soil testing for Site Development by making edible soil profiles with Maryellen Saylor, one of our civil engineers, using pudding, gummy worms, and crushed Oreos. The children then learned the importance of teamwork with Jennifer Lowry, HR Manager, by enjoying a scavenger hunt to find prizes that were hidden around the office.
Later in the morning, the children learned about bridge design and bridge inspection with Cindy Vegara, one of our bridge inspectors. They built their own bridges using toothpicks and marshmallows. Next, PCS land surveyors Bob Snyder, Nick Schwartz, and Tom Wilson taught the children about “geocaching” by having them find the location of a point using GPS systems. After enjoying a special lunch with their parents, the children had the opportunity to create a website with Bill Wilson, IT Manager, highlighting the day’s events with photos. The children also designed marketing flyers with our marketing department that included a photo of them dressed-up as their career for the day with a few sentences about what they enjoyed most about “Bring Your Children to Work Day” at PCS.
