News: Norristown Community Embraces PC&S Master Plan for Poley Park

4/14/2008
On Wednesday, February 20th, Pickering, Corts & Summerson’s (PC&S) latest Master Plan for Poley Park, “Sketch G,” received unanimous raves from Norristown residents.
After receiving approval from the Norristown Community, PC&S presented the design to the Norristown Planning Commission on March 11th and to the Norristown Council on March 18th. Both groups unanimously approved the plan.
The estimated construction cost for the “Sketch G” design is $1,745,913, which has 147 parking spaces. Of these parking spaces, 47 are on a stabilized turf semi-circle that surrounds an outdoor gazebo/stage area that doubles as a recreation area for special events. Prior to the February 20th public meeting on Poley Park, many residents demanded more parking spaces. The most popular option was “Sketch B,” a $1,118,638 design with 101 parking spaces; however, PC&S was asked to refine the plan to maximize parking while also keeping the other amenities that the residents requested.
“Sketch G” has a small playground area near a covered entertainment/stage area, several concentric rings of amphitheater seating arranged around the stabilized turf semi-circle, and a pedestrian bridge from the corner of the park, across Stony Creek, to the SEPTA rail station parking lot.
A public water sculpture/fountain is proposed to be located at the entranceway on West Marshall Street. Also, a new pedestrian ramp will allow handicapped visitors to reach the lower level of the park from the South end of the Corson Street parking area.
Plans are underway to seek greenspace funds, state community development funds, and state Department of Environmental Protection funds to implement the park Master Plan.
