Replacing the existing bridge and modifying the catenary support for the electrification lines were the significant design issues encountered on this project. Our design solution provided new catenary support structures on each side of the bridge to eliminate the attachments and to facilitate bridge demolition and construction activities. A major potion of the construction was constructed at night to maintain uninterrupted commuter rail service for the SEPTA R5 Lansdale Branch.
Due to the roadway grades and railroad underclearance requirements, the new structure type will included a steel through girder and floorbeam system, similar in appearance to the existing bridge. The new bridge design provided internal redundancy to eliminate the fracture critical nature of the through girders.
