Underwater Inspections

|
PC&S is currently providing the New Jersey DOT with underwater bridge safety inspections as part of our 60 Bridge, 2 cycle inspection project in Salem County, NJ. In this project, structures requiring underwater inspections are inspected concurrent with the NBIS normal bridge inspection. This allows mobilization costs to be lowered. The inspection team consists of highly skilled Professional Engineers, Certified Bridge Safety Inspectors and in-house Commercial Divers. PC&S has provided similar services in several additional Counties in New Jersey.
The inspections are performed conforming to OSHA Guidelines and include all areas from the high waterline to the streambed. All substructure elements are inspected for deterioration, including spalls, cracks, checking, marine borer damage, rot, necking and other defects. Sufficient soundings are taken to determine the relationship of the substructure foundations to the streambed. Areas of streambed scour, erosion and undermining are detailed.
During inspections, hardhat diving with surface supplied air and hard wire communication systems enabled our commercially certified bridge inspection divers to be in constant two-way voice contact with Professional Engineers. Having an in-house Diving Division with divers who also perform NBIS above water inspections, substantially reduces the mobilization and coordination time involved in these types of inspections.
