Inspection of Girard Point Bridge During Rehabilitation in Philadelphia, PennDOT District 6-0
At the request of PennDOT District 6-0, PCS provided an in-depth, hands-on inspection of the Girard Point Bridge during rehabilitation. The Girard Point Bridge, is 5,167′ long and consists of riveted steel deck truss approach spans and cantilevered riveted steel thru-truss main spans. The bridge carries Interstate 95 on two levels over the Schuylkill River, CSX Railroad, and Bridge Street.
PCS conducted the inspection during the ongoing rehabilitation so that any deficiencies identified could be repaired prior to the completion of construction. As part of the inspection, all truss gusset plates were measured with calipers for section loss.
PCS inspectors employed hands-on inspection methods on all areas involved in the reconstruction utilizing special equipment including aerial lifts, bucket trucks, underbridge inspection cranes, and the contractor’s rigging. PCS mobilized up to three inspection teams with some inspections conducted on weekends to fit within the construction schedule.
