In-Depth, Hands-On, Inspection of Six Bridges Surrounding Amtrak’s 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, PennDOT District 6-0
At the request of PennDOT District 6-0, PCS provided an in-depth, hands-on inspection of six bridges surrounding Amtrak’s 30th Street Station (2012-2014). The bridges carry Arch, Market, “Little” Market, Chestnut, and 30th (two structures) Streets. The bridges span over Lower 30th Street, up to ten electrified commuter rail lines for Amtrak, and an Amtrak parking garage. The inspection was carried out over a two and a half year period.
PCS conducted the inspection during the on-going rehabilitation so that any deficiencies identified could be repaired prior to the completion of construction. PCS inspectors employed hands-on inspection methods on all areas involved in the reconstruction utilizing special equipment including aerial lifts, bucket trucks, and ladders. PCS mobilized up to two inspection teams with some inspections conducted on weekends and nights to fit within track closures and catenary outages. Coordination with the contractor and Amtrak personnel was required to adhere to the construction schedule.
